# Rosalyn

{% hint style="info" %}
Rosalyn is only available on portals where it was enabled before June 2026.
{% endhint %}

[Rosalyn](https://www.rosalyn.ai/) is an online proctoring solution which integrates with Synap to provide additional security during high stakes exams. Rosalyn offers 2 proctoring options:

1. Lockdown browser
2. Live proctoring

Additional charges for both options on MAU and Credit plans.

### Rosalyn Lockdown Browser

Under this mode, candidates will have to install the Rosalyn application, and then they take the exam within that application instead of a normal browser. The Rosalyn application uses the same rendering engine as Google Chrome, but it has additional 'lockdown' features such as enforcing full-screen and making sure that the candidate does not have any other applications open during the exam process.

In Lockdown-Only mode, no footage will be recorded, and nothing will be reviewed - it is just for ensuring that the candidate takes an exam in a locked-down application that restricts access to other materials.

This mode would be suitable for low to medium-stakes exams, or for high-stakes exams conducted in an assessment centre where you have your own invigilators available.

### Rosalyn Live Proctoring

This mode uses all of the lockdown functionality described above, but it will also record the candidate's Webcam (Video + Audio) as well as their screen.

The footage is monitored in real-time by AI algorithms which are able to detect signs of suspicious behaviour. However, what makes Rosalyn unique is that the AI itself does not make any decisions - instead it is used as a screening mechanism, and if suspicious behaviour is flagged, it immediately alerts one of Rosalyn's trained human proctors (who are available 24/7), who will then access the exam session and intervene if necessary.

Interventions can take the form of the proctor pausing a candidate's exam and messaging them to ask them to correct their behaviour, or in extreme circumstances, terminating an exam session.

At the end of an exam session, the footage is processed and your team are invited to make a final decision on the available exam sessions.

* [Trust Center](https://www.rosalyn.ai/trust-center)

Check out our guide below for steps to create a Rosalyn Live Proctored exam on Synap ⬇️

### **System Requirements**

Rosalyn is installed as a desktop application for MacOS or Windows. Candidates will be guided to download this application before they start their exam and instructions will be provided to them as a part of this process.

The system requirements for Rosalyn are:

**Operating System - Any of the following**

* Windows 10 (64-bit only)
* Windows 11
* MacOS High Sierra
* MacOS Catalina
* MacOS Monterey
* MacOS Ventura
* MacOS Big Sur

{% hint style="warning" %}
Rosalyn can only be installed on a Windows or Mac computer (e.g. a desktop or a laptop). It does **not** support Linux, Chromebooks, Mobile Phones or Tablets (excluding Microsoft Surface). If your exams need to be taken on a wider range of devices, consider using [Synoptic proctoring](/doc/exams/proctoring-with-synoptic.md) which has multiple different installation methods.
{% endhint %}

**Browsers - Any modern browser**

**Hardware and other requirements**

* Working webcam and microphone
* Dual-core CPU
* 2 GB RAM.
* At least 500 MB of available hard disk space
* Photo ID

**Network Requirements**

* Broadband internet with a minimum upload/download speed of 500Kb/s

### Important considerations

1. **User requirements**

Users must download Rosalyn to their laptop or computer. See our [Rosalyn candidate guide](https://synap.ac/candidates/candidate-rosalyn-proctoring/) which can be shared with users. Rosalyn's own help centre can be found [here](https://support.rosalyn.ai/en/collections/3267143-examinee-help-center). Remember to do this users will need access to the right permissions and be on a suitable network.

2. **Human Proctors**

The AI is used to flag suspicious behaviour to a human proctor, it is the human proctor that makes any final decisions. They will always prioritise getting a user through the exam, then providing you as the admin a comprehensive report so you can make the decision on whether or not to fail an exam based on cheating.

### Candidate guide

Guide your candidates through what to expect on exam day from their Rosalyn proctored exams. More information and help can be found in the [Rosalyn Examinee Help Center](https://support.rosalyn.ai/en/collections/3267143-examinee-help-center)

{% hint style="danger" %}
🚨 We recommend **you don't share this page and the rest of the platform documentation with your candidates**. Instead use the copy in this to create your own instructions specific to your exams.

🧠 You could put your into a note on the platform and pin it as FAQs on the student menu [see ](https://academy.synap.ac/doc/portal-settings/user-access-and-pages#create-custom-note-pages)[this doc for more](https://academy.synap.ac/doc/portal-settings/user-access-and-pages#create-custom-note-pages) - 👀 \
\
🧠 You can use the information here to build the instructions shown to candidates before they start the exam - 👀
{% endhint %}

In order to take a Rosalyn-proctored exam on Synap, you will need a computer and internet access that meets ALL of the requirements above. We strongly recommend using a personal device where you have the ability to install applications and grant permissions. Sometimes with work-issued devices you may find that you need additional permissions from your IT team, so it is much simpler if you take the exam on a device which you have full control over

### **Taking the exam**

After clicking start exam on Synap you will be prompted to download the Rosalyn software. If you have already downloaded it you will be prompted to open it. Once open you will go through a series of pre-exam checks:

### Exam Rules

You institution may set additional rules for your exam. Breaching any of the standard rules of an exam will be flagged as cheating. Continuing to break the rules of the exam may result in your session being ended and you being unable to finish an attempt.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://academy.synap.ac/doc/integrations/apis/rosalyn.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
