Assignments are the most structured form of learning on Synap, designed to be linear structured courses and provide a more configuration options than collections.
Unlike collections assignments can be configured to have certificates, pass marks, and a clear progress through each item. In order to create an assignment you'll need:
A user group
A source course
When building courses you'll notice courses and therefore assignments have more user input library item options than collections, including surveys, file uploads, SCORM, audio files, and text entry. Use these and other options to build rich engaging courses for your assignments
Once assigned to a group any changes to a course or the underlying library items will not be automatically copied over to any existing assignments. See our viewing an publishing new versions docs for now to push changes
Once your course and user group is ready, you're ready to create an assignment. Head over to the assignments page, if it's not visible on your portal you may need to enable it in your Settings>User access. Learn more below about assigning a course
Once an assignment is live, head over to the assignment at any time to check on the progress of your users.
From here you can see which version of an assignment a user is on, how many items they've completed, how long they spent, when they started / finished, as well as the statuses:
Not started = the user hasn't clicked to start the assignment yet but it is available to them
In progress = the user has started but not submitted the assignment
Pending review = if manual review is enabled, and the candidate has submitted
Passed = candidate has submitted, if manual review is enabled then it has also been passed by a moderator / admin
Revoked = a moderator or admin has manual revoked this assignment and the user can no longer access it (can be reinstated)
Clicking to the 'View' button will take you to that specific users assignment management page where you can view or download any items they've uploaded, revoke or reinstate the entire assignment, set internal review notes or external candidate feedback, and reinstate items (if you'd like the user to redo or re-upload anything)
We've got loads of interactive demo's set up on https://universe.synap.ac including assignments, click here go to our interactive demo's page to try them for yourself, or read about some of the ways to use assignments below.
Guide users through specific items and let them refer back to assignments, include deadlines and manual reviews for a more hands on learning experience
In using the upload box item in your course you can task your users with uploading a specific file type and manually review it before allowing them to progress with their assignment.
Open your course and select add item
Choose the upload box item type
Select the type of file you want your users to upload
Click the cog icon in the top right hand corner of the item
Select manual review (any users moderating the group taking the assignment will be notified by email when a file is ready for review)
If you have selected image as your file type, you can allow webcam in the cog menu so users can simply use their webcam to take a picture of themselves / their id
Save item
Synap can be used as a store of information as all uploaded files will be accessible via the assignment. Just click view on the assignment and then the View button on a user to see their progress and any files uploaded for that assignment. You can also download the files from here.
On completion of an assignment you can provide your users with a digital certificate, perfect for certified online courses. Users will get this upon submission or after their assignment has passed any manual reviews if this has been enabled
